College Football Countdown: The Heisman Special

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

Last year's Heisman winner, Mark Ingram, gives his acceptance speech.

Here at NextGen Sports, our College Football Countdown series has chronicled some of the nation’s most talented incoming freshman and spotlighted several of the best BCS dark horse teams (Oklahoma, LSU, North Carolina, and Pittsburgh). Today we have another entry in the series: our Heisman selections for the 2010 season, along with a surprise player who we think could closely contend for one as well. With typical Heisman favorites Tim Tebow, Colt McCoy, and Sam Bradford now in the NFL, this could be as wide open a race as we’ve seen in college football for the past decade. Last year Alabama tailback Mark Ingram won the award, which broke the streak of quarterback recipients. This season, though, there are more quarterbacks capable of winning the award than ever, along with a very strong group of running backs and receivers. Without further ado, here are the picks:

B-More Camping: Ravens Training Camp

Monday, August 9th, 2010

Fabian Washington drills during camp.

We at NextGen Sports decided to follow up the Steelers piece from yesterday with Pittsburgh’s chief rivals, the Baltimore Ravens. Coming off a 9-7 season, in which head coach John Harbaugh’s team managed to squeak into the playoffs, the Ravens enter 2010 with an even tougher schedule against a much improved AFC North. Without further introduction, here is the ultimate guide to Ravens’ training camp…

Player Watch

Mike McLaughlin - McLaughlin, a former Boston College player, might just make the Ravens the roster this season. An undrafted free agent, he has displayed impressive versatility, switching from outside linebacker to fullback. With incumbent Le’Ron McClain hoping to better supplement the running game this season, McLaughlin could find a home as the Ravens’ blocking fullback. Don’t be surprised to see the 5 foot 11 inch, 236 pounder to find his way on the final roster. Read More→

A Checkup in the Steel City…Steelers Training Camp

Saturday, August 7th, 2010

Rashard Mendenhall runs in for a score.

Entering this season, the topic of conversation surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers is the quarterback position. Ben Roethlisberger will miss at least the first 4 games of the year, and a shaky start could end the Steelers’ playoff hopes early into October. Of course, head coach Mike Tomlin needs to find Roethlisberger’s replacement, be it either Byron Leftwich or Dennis Dixon. Ignoring signal callers, here is your training camp report from Latrobe, Pennsylvania…

Players To Watch

Maurkice Pouncey, C/G - Yes, there has been much controversy recently swirling around his college years at Florida, but Pouncey promises to be the missing piece in the Steelers offense. He bolsters an inconsistent offensive league, which looks to regain its form of the past, in hopes of reestablishing a dormant running game. It will be interesting to see how Pouncey develops chemistry with his offensive line mates, considering he played alongside twin brother Mike Pouncey in Gainesville for his entire college football career. Off Go the Training Wheels…Chicago Bears

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

Major Wright during practice.

Here at NextGen Sports, it is not our primary job to report on just the NFL. We leave the world of Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, and Drew Brees to the ESPN family of networks, along other broadcasting giants. So, we decided to blend College Football and the NFL in our Training Camp Preview. Today we focus on Lovie Smith’s squad, the Chicago Bears of the NFC North.

Player Watch

Major Wright – General Manager Jerry Angelo couldn’t have been happier to steal the former Florida star in the 3rd round. Having started for all of his three seasons in Gainesville, Wright possesses loads of experience coupled with elite speed to start immediately at free safety. At nearly 6 feet and 206 pounds, he is truly a force to be reckoned with. Wright should be contributing all over the field on defense in Chicago in 2010. If I were last year’s starter Danieal Manning, I wouldn’t even bother returning to the Bears. His job is occupied, to say the least.

Zackary Bowman – Once part of the practice squad, he ended the 2009 season in the starting lineup. Now, Nathan Vasher, who would have competed for a starting cornerback job, is off the team, and Bowman looks to solidify himself as a top tier cover man. Charles Tillman continues to lead the group, in terms of experience, but head coach Lovie Smith decided in offseason minicamp to hand Bowman the number one cornerback job. In a now pass heavy division, the Bears will rely on the versatility of former 5th round pick from the University of Nebraska. He will need to out muscle the likes of Calvin Johnson and Sydney Rice, yet also possess the speed to keep up with the Packers’ Greg Jennings. Read More→

College Football Countdown Team Spotlight: Oklahoma Sooners

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

Ryan Broyles returns a punt.

The last meaningful memory of the Oklahoma Sooners’ 2009 season was the sight of star quarterback Sam Bradford awkwardly hitting the turf under the weight of a BYU defender. Originally, the team was seen by many to be a contender for a national title. And why not? With their Heisman winning quarterback returning, along with a stellar offense featuring All-World tight end Jermaine Greisham. and rock solid defense headed up by tackle Gerald McCoy, the sky was the limit. That sky came crashing down in their season opening loss to BYU. Not only did they lose their chances at a national championship right off the bat, but they also lost Bradford.

This season, coach Bob Stoops knows the fans in Norman, Oklahoma are yearning for success. Stoops has created a winning environment for the Sooners, with his savvy recruiting skills and astute game planning, as proven by his 2000 National Championship. Last year the Sooners were able to pull of a win in the Sun Bowl versus Stanford, but a victory in a non BCS bowl hardly quelled their appetite for success. The Sooners have had a rough recent history in Bowl games before last year, losing to Florida in the ‘08 Championship game, and then back to back Fiesta Bowl losses to Boise State and West Virginia the seasons before that. Bob Stoops and company have a chance to change the unlucky string of outcomes the Sooners have endured over the past couple seasons, and with most of their starters on both sides of the ball returning from last year they can do just that.
