A Treasure Beneath the Rocky Mountains

Monday, August 30th, 2010

The question is simple. Who is currently the best player on the Colorado Rockies? Ubaldo Jimenez? Well, he would be the popular choice, considering Jimenez had one of the best 1st halves ever this season. Perhaps, the more informed baseball fan would point to Troy Tulowitzki. He is probably the best shortstop not named Hanley Ramirez in baseball, and although often injured, Tulowitzki has drawn comparisons to Hall of Famer, Cal Ripken Jr. Yet, to me, the answer has to be Carlos Gonzalez (left).  At 24 years old, he looks to be among the best centerfielders in the major leagues, producing statistics that rival Albert Pujols and Joey Votto in the National League.

Gonzalez’s road to big leagues is unheralded, but quite common among Central American talents.  He was first signed in 2002 by the Arizona Diamonbacks at only age 17. In his first professional stint, Gonzalez played in just 72 games. He batted a meager .258 with just 6 home runs. The following season, however, proved to be more successful for the native of Maracaibo, Venezuela. He hit .275 with 10 home runs. Read More→

Back to the Future Isn’t Always Good

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

Matt Duchene celebrates after his game winning goal.

Former Colorado Avalanche General Manager Francois Giguere took a fan-favorite approach in building his team a few years ago. In the 2007-08 season, the Avalanche only had two members of the Stanley Cup winning teams of the past: Joe Sakic and Milan Hejduk.

Giguere thought he would make a fan-favorite splash by re-signing a franchise legend in Peter Forsberg and acquiring defensemen Ruslan Salei and Adam Foote for the stretch and the playoffs. Forsberg was a huge offensive part of the Avs’ Stanley Cup championships from the past, and Adam Foote was the trustworthy shutdown defenseman from the past.

The Avalanche blew by the Minnesota Wild in the first round, only to get overpowered and swept by the eventual Stanley Cup winners in Detroit. Read More→

Back to Buffalo…Bills Training Camp

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

Jairus Byrd returns a pick.

We transition here, at NextGen Sports, from two potential Super Bowl contenders in both the Ravens and Steelers to a once proud yet currently dormant franchise, the Buffalo Bills. Without further a due, here is your preview from St. John Fisher College in Pittsford, NY…

PLAYER WATCH:

Jairus Byrd - A second round draft pick out of the University of Oregon, he took hold of the starting free safety job just two games into the 2009 season. Quickly, Byrd established himself as a budding superstar on the NFL scene, recording a league-best nine interceptions. A groin injury, however, ended Byrd’s incredible rookie season prematurely, and resulting surgery caused the San Diego native to miss the Pro Bowl. This season, expect Byrd to be completely healthy and just as dynamic in the secondary. New head coach Chan Gailey looks to start Donte Whitner at strong safety, opposite Byrd to begin the upcoming campaign, and clearly, if he produces at the same rate as last year, the Bills should at least compete in a pass heavy AFC East.

Marcus Easley – Easley began his college career as a walk-on at the University of Connecticut, and after three seasons toiling on the bench, he finally excelled in his senior year.  The 6 foot 3 inch 210 pound wide receiver scored eight touchdowns in the final ten games of 2009, leading the Huskies to a victory in the PapaJohns.com Bowl. Drafted in the 4th round, the Bills organization hopes Easley can give quarterback Trent Edwards a more viable red zone threat. Remember, Buffalo comes into 2010 thin at the wide receiver position, following the departures of both Terrell Owens and Josh Reed. Read More→

College Football Countdown: The Heisman Special

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

Last year's Heisman winner, Mark Ingram, gives his acceptance speech.

Here at NextGen Sports, our College Football Countdown series has chronicled some of the nation’s most talented incoming freshman and spotlighted several of the best BCS dark horse teams (Oklahoma, LSU, North Carolina, and Pittsburgh). Today we have another entry in the series: our Heisman selections for the 2010 season, along with a surprise player who we think could closely contend for one as well. With typical Heisman favorites Tim Tebow, Colt McCoy, and Sam Bradford now in the NFL, this could be as wide open a race as we’ve seen in college football for the past decade. Last year Alabama tailback Mark Ingram won the award, which broke the streak of quarterback recipients. This season, though, there are more quarterbacks capable of winning the award than ever, along with a very strong group of running backs and receivers. Without further ado, here are the picks:

B-More Camping: Ravens Training Camp

Monday, August 9th, 2010

Fabian Washington drills during camp.

We at NextGen Sports decided to follow up the Steelers piece from yesterday with Pittsburgh’s chief rivals, the Baltimore Ravens. Coming off a 9-7 season, in which head coach John Harbaugh’s team managed to squeak into the playoffs, the Ravens enter 2010 with an even tougher schedule against a much improved AFC North. Without further introduction, here is the ultimate guide to Ravens’ training camp…

Player Watch

Mike McLaughlin - McLaughlin, a former Boston College player, might just make the Ravens the roster this season. An undrafted free agent, he has displayed impressive versatility, switching from outside linebacker to fullback. With incumbent Le’Ron McClain hoping to better supplement the running game this season, McLaughlin could find a home as the Ravens’ blocking fullback. Don’t be surprised to see the 5 foot 11 inch, 236 pounder to find his way on the final roster. Read More→
